The only ones I've heard of are Stowe, Alcott and Hill. What about Elizabeth Gaskell, Frances Hodson Burnett, Lucy Maud Montgomery? All hugely popular.

How did I forget Lucy Maud Montgomery?!?!?! Anne forever. And I'm adding the authors you mentioned to my list, thank you!

I've read Craig Rice but not Mary Roberts Rinehart or Anna Katherine Green. I plan to remedy that. Sarah Weinman has written introductions to two anthologies of women crime writers of the 1940s and 1950s.

Cool! And I like that you noted first writers of detective fiction....not first women writers :-) Have you read their work? Any you recommend?

Do you know, I haven’t spent much time reading classic works, or any written in centuries much before the 20th (unless it’s academic research). But I love the romance of the idea of these ladies making their own way in a very masculine world, by creating their art. I’m going to have a look into the links in this article because I think I must just have to add a few to my TBR list!

I hope to start reading a few so I can make some recommendations! I haven't read any of these works...yet.
